- Story Text: China's President Xi Jinping met with former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday (October 16).
Following current New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's one-day visit to China earlier in April, former Prime Minister John Key called on Xi with the aim to reset the diplomatic ties of the two countries.
During Ardern's first visit, the two countries signed agreements on eliminating double taxation and tax avoidance, as they looked to shore up relations following a series of incidents that cast doubt on the strength of the nations' economic partnership.
New Zealand has also been a focus of Xi's growing campaign for influence in traditional bastions of U.S. support in Asia-Pacific.
