And, this attack is a very vicious attack, took place practically on the eve of his call for yet another massive protest parade in Hong Kong on Sunday (October 20)." JOURNALIST WRITING (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAN-DEMOCRAT LAWMAKER, CLAUDIO MO,SAYING: "We can't help feeling that this entire thing is part of this plan to shed blood on Hong Kong's peaceful protest. If you're think you are peaceful and you're safe, you're not. And so, think twice before you take to the street. And, it also happens that Jimmy is also running in the upcoming district council election and this attack might just, once again, politically motivated not just on the protest front but on the election front. There's some scheme to try to spread some chilling effect around this society that if you stick your head up, you might inadvertently end up on the block and you should watch out." PHOTOGRAPHER TAKING PHOTO (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAN-DEMOCRAT LAWMAKER, KENNETHLEUNG, SAYING: "This is not a single incident since, July this year, more than seven legislators, district council candidates have been under vicious attacks and got hurt. And none of these cases have we got a suspect arrested. And I strongly urge the police to properly perform their duties and peaceful demonstrators will not be intimidated by this barbaric act." - Story Text: Hong Kong's pro-democracy lawmakers held a news conference on Thursday (October 17) condemning the violent attack on Civil Human Right Front (CHRF) leader Jimmy Sham on Wednesday (October 16) night, calling the brutal acts an attempt to create 'chilling effects'.
The leader of the group, Jimmy Sham, was attacked by a group of men in the gritty Mong Kok district on the Kowloon peninsula. Photographs on social media showed a bloodied Sham laying in the street. It is the second time he has been attacked since the protests began.
Hong Kong's unrest was ignited by an extradition bill, which could have seen residents sent to Communist Party-controlled mainland courts for trial. Lam has said the bill has been withdrawn, but the suspension of the legislature meant it could not be formally dropped.
