- Story Text: Dozens of port workers from Barcelona joined the general strike in Catalonia on Friday (October 18) to protest Monday's (October 14) supreme court ruling that jailed nine Catalan separatist leaders for up to 13 years.
Wrapped in their reflective yellow vests, port workers marched from Barcelona's port to Via Alienate, where they sat on the ground and blocked one of the Catalan's capital main roads.
"Firstly, our rights are violated and secondly, we are totally defenceless" said Albert Gill, a port worker spokesman.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters are marching from five different Catalan cities to join the protest in Barcelona against the sentences to the separatist leaders.
Major roads were blocked off across Catalonia on Friday (October 18) and several main streets in Barcelona were closed to traffic in anticipation of the marches, as well as picket lines that had begun springing up, while regional trains and the city's metro were running on a reduced timetable.
