Yet, culture has to rethink problems like this one and work with them every day. Now, we pretend as if nothing happened. Chernobyl exists, exists and that's it. We are not thinking about it, not working with it, and we think it will pass but it won't. But it won't pass because this tragedy is a post-traumatic syndrome in the scale of the nation.†(MUTE) TIME-LAPSE OF ARTISTS ADDING DETAILS TO MURAL (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) AUTHOR OF THE SKETCH, VALERIY KORSHUNOV, SAYING: "If we make it look like there are only graves here, it will prove that we lost to Chernobyl and to what the Soviets did to us. We must be stronger, we must fill Chernobyl with new meanings every day, bring culture, technologies, and bring Chernobyl back to normal life. We should make it not the exclusion zone, but the zone of temporary resettlement and keep working in this direction. People that left this area should be able to return, even if they return to see a museum here.†CONSTRUCTION CRANE AND PAINTING PROCESS TWO MEN (RESCUERS) TALKING ABOUT MURAL DETAILS OF MURAL ARTIST RECREATING DETAIL OF MURAL FROM BLUEPRINT ON PAPER CHERNOBYL PLANT BUILDING (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) AUTHOR OF THE SKETCH, VALERIY KORSHUNOV, SAYING: "(ASKED ABOUT GLOBAL MESSAGE HE WANTS TO SEND TO THE SOCIETY) There are plenty of such events (like Chernobyl) that may occur in the future, and the smarter we become, the more such events will occur. - Story Text: Chernobyl power plant took on a fresh, brighter look, a "Look in the future", as the author called his mural, painted on one of the buildings.
An 18 by 58-meter painting - showing a herd of wild horses galloping on a green plain with a black hand in front holding an atom - symbolizes new hope and renewal, said the author of a sketch Valeriy Korshunov.
"We must be stronger, we must fill Chernobyl with new meanings every day, bring culture, technologies, and bring Chernobyl back to normal life," the artist said.
The plant posted a statement on its website, saying the main objective of the mural was to cheer up its workers, whose offices now face the painting instead of a blank wall. 59 percent of the personnel liked the result - the statement added.
