- Story Text:A small boat carrying sixteen migrants made it into the port of the Italian island of Lampedusa on Friday (October 18) unusually arriving independently without having been picked up at sea.
Medical staff and police stopped and searched the migrants, many of whom are believed to be Tunisia, most with no shoes on their feet.
The migrants were placed on a bus and taken away to the holding centre.
Recovery teams are currently working to retrieve five bodies from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, more than a week after a crowded migrant boat capsized off the coast of the island. Bad weather has hampered the bodies being collected and only one was seen being carried in a coffin into a hearse on Friday afternoon.
Investigators are taking bone samples from the bodies of seven migrants, including one child, that were retrieved on Thursday. The samples will be used to try and identify those who drowned.
On the day of the shipwreck, October 7, the bodies of 13 women were recovered and the coastguard said 13 men and women had survived the sinking of the boat.
The boat, which appeared to have started its trip in Libya and stopped in neighbouring Tunisia, was carrying more than 50 people at the time of the disaster.
