Catalan demonstrators staged a sit-down on Saturday (October 19) to protest against the jailing of Catalan separatist leaders which has caused a wave of violence in the region.
The peaceful demonstration was a change of scene after Barcelona saw its worst night of disturbances in decades on Friday (October 18) as masked youths blocked roads with blazing garbage bins and hurled rocks at security forces, who responded by firing repeated rounds of smoke grenades and tear gas.
Protesters in the Catalan capital chanted slogans like "Catalonia, anti-fascists" and created a human chain to prevent violence between protesters and the police.
Catalonia's president, Quim Torra, said the violence did not reflect the peaceful nature of the traditional Catalan independence movement and asked for discussions with Madrid.
