So, we went through some of the home movies and they ended up in the movie and ironically, as a filmmaker, I think they're the best moments in the film, where Bruce has a hand-held camera, on a honeymoon and captures beauty. And captures also the essence of a lot of the themes and the love of their relationship, Bruce and Patti's relationship." - Story Text: Bruce Springsteen is releasing a new documentary film, a cinematic version of his latest album, "Western Stars". The movie shows Springsteen performing all 13 of the record's tracks, backed up by a band and a full orchestra, under the cathedral ceiling of his nearly 100-year-old barn. Springsteen's longtime collaborator Thom Zimny directed and co-produced the film, but the Boss also made his directorial debut, scripting and narrating the documentary.
"It was fun, I mean I didn't get anywhere near a camera, so, my co-direction credit is really through the graciousness of Thom Zimny, my director. And we collaborated on the whole film together from the beginning to the end so we split the credit, but I've worked with Thom for 20 years and he's been the life behind all my film projects. It was a bit of a different experience but a lot of fun," Springsteen told Reuters.
Zimny has directed several projects with Springsteen, including the documentary "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town," and the film version of the Tony Award-winning "Springsteen on Broadway".
"This film was a dream-come-true, because I was collaborating with Bruce in the studio, where was scoring the music, writing the script and I was next door to him in the editing room and so we shared this time together. And for me it made it a really personal adventure in film," said Zimny.
Also included in the feature are home movie clips showing Springsteen and Scialfa, sometimes in intimate moments.
"We went through some of the home movies and they ended up in the movie and ironically, as a filmmaker, I think they're the best moments in the film, where Bruce has a hand-held camera, on a honeymoon and captures beauty. And captures also the essence of a lot of the themes and the love of their relationship, Bruce and Patti's relationship."
Also on the red carpet was fashion veteran Ralph Lauren and E-Street band member and actor, Steven Van Zandt. Van Zandt says that "Western Star", the film, is the culmination of a Springsteen trilogy which includes autobiography, "Born to Run" and his Broadway performance, "Springsteen on Broadway". The former "Sopranos" star says these artworks are the unique product of the insights that come with ageing.
"I think is setting a new standard for artists that age a little bit, showing that you don't have to stop being an artist, just because you're getting a little bit older," said Van Zandt.
"Western Stars" is slated for global release beginning on October 25, 2019.
