- Story Text: A crowd of close to 200 Chileans held a demonstration in front Chile's embassy in Paris on Monday (October 21) to show solidarity with protesters in Chile, they said, after a weekend of chaos in which at least seven people were killed amid violent clashes, arson attacks and looting in cities throughout the country.
Several Chilean cities were engulfed by days of riots, along with peaceful protests, after a hike in public transport costs. The violence prompted President Sebastian Pinera to declare a state of emergency, placing the military in charge of security in the city of six million.
Protesters like student Marcelo, who studies in Paris, gathered outside the Chilean embassy with flags and signs denouncing the measures taken by Pinera to quell the protests.
"Now we've seen that he (Chilean President Sebastian Pinera) is capable of taking anti-democratic measures against the Chilean people. So this has to be denounced with all the might necessary to stop it," he said.
Pinera extended the state of emergency late on Sunday (October 20) night, saying "we are at war" against vandals who had turned out in droves throughout the capital over the weekend.
