- Story Text: Hong Kong residents said on Monday (October 21) that anti-government protesters and police both "overreacted" after a largely peaceful protest degenerated into violence on the Kowloon peninsula, with shops destroyed and ATM torched.
A group of mainly young radical protesters on Sunday (October 20) had targeted banks and other businesses perceived to be linked to China, damaging some store fronts and setting fires on the prime shopping and commercial street of Nathan Road.
"I think the question comes from minor, minor problem - it's the (extradition) bill. But now, all parties they overreact and it's very, very difficult to compromise," said Ben, a Hong Kong resident.
After two weeks of relative calm in the five-month long political crisis in Hong Kong, Sunday's large turnout reflected strong support for the anti-government movement despite police branding the march illegal because of concerns over public safety.
