- Story Text: Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak returned to court on Tuesday (October 22), as prosecutors and defence lawyers present their closing submissions in his corruption trial over a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB.
The trial judge is expected to rule in November on whether a case has been established against the ex-premier. Najib is facing charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering over allegations that he illegally received about $10 million from SRC International, a former 1MDB unit. 1MDB, founded by Najib in 2009, is the subject of corruption and money laundering investigations in at least six countries.
The U.S. Department of Justice has said about $4.5 billion was misappropriated from the fund. Malaysians voted Najib out of power in May 2018, as disgust grew over corruption and rising living costs, and the investigations of 1Malaysia Development Berhad are seen as a test of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's promises to root out corruption.
He faces years in prison after being hit with a total of 42 criminal charges, most of them linked to losses at 1MDB and other state entities. Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing and says the charges against him are politically motivated. Authorities have also charged his wife, Rosmah Mansor, and several high-ranked officials of the former administration. All of them have pleaded not guilty.
