- Story Text: The indigenous movement in Ecuador said on Wednesday (October 23) that talks with President Lenin Moreno on fuel subsidies were paused due to the government's "persecution" of its leaders, following a two-week protest that broke out at the beginning of the month.
In mid-October, Moreno opened a dialogue table with the indigenous movement and other social sectors to stop the violent protests against his austerity measures, and also repealed the decree that put an end to diesel and extra gasoline subsidies.
Indigenous people seek to include other topics in the debate, such as a review of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), oil contracts and the financial situation of public companies.
The government did not immediately discuss the announcement by the indigenous people.
Ecuador reached an agreement with the IMF in February for about 4.2 billion dollars.
