- Story Text: Flag-waving protesters in Lebanon kept roads blocked with vehicles and makeshift barricades on Wednesday (October 23) while banks and schools remained shut.
Teachers encouraged students to join street protests, saying that they were teaching children how to protect their country and how to be leaders.
Hundreds of thousands of people have flooded the streets for nearly a week, furious at a political class they accuse of pushing the economy to the point of collapse.
Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's government announced an emergency reform package on Monday (October 21), to try to defuse the anger of protesters demanding the government resigns and also to steer the heavily indebted state away from a looming financial crisis.
Banks in Lebanon will remain closed on Thursday (October 24), the banking association said, as unprecedented protests gripped the country despite the government announcing emergency reforms.
