- Story Text: Venezuela's opposition protested Thursday (October 24) in Caracas to denounce chronic blackouts and frequent power outages in the oil country, especially in the western state of Zulia.
About a hundred people attended the march that tried to reach the Corpoelec (Venezuelan electricity corporation) headquarters, but the Venezuelan National Guard blocked the demonstrators from reaching their intended destination.
Supporters of the government of President Nicolas Maduro also marched towards Corpoelec, but they marched to reject the opposition protest. There were no immediate reports of confrontations.
In March this year, Venezuela was affected by two massive power outages that critics attribute to insufficient investment following the 2007 nationalization of the electricity sector.
The government of President Nicolas Maduro has in some cases attributed blackouts to sabotage by his adversaries.
