- Story Text: Russian President Vladimir Putin said the final declaration of Russia-Africa summit in Sochi reflects goals to encourage development of bilateral cooperation. The document was adopted on Thursday (October 24) - the second and final day of the forum.
Putin's Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, stated that the leaders of Africa and Russia came to the mutual agreement thanks to the strong ties in economics, science, trade and in the humanitarian sphere.
During the signing ceremony, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chairperson of African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat put their names on the memorandum of understanding between Russian government and the African Union.
Speaking before dozens of African heads of state at a two-day summit in the southern Russian city of Sochi, Putin called for trade with African countries to double over the next 4-5 years and said Moscow had written off African debts to the tune of over $20 billion.
The first Russia-Africa summit is part of a Kremlin drive to win business and restore influence that faded after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, which backed leftwing governments and movements across the continent throughout the Cold War.
