- Story Text: South Korean activists held an anti-Japan rally in Seoul on Saturday (August 15) against a speech of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the 70th anniversary marking the end of Japan's colonial rule which lasted from 1910-1945.
In the statement marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, Abe acknowledged Japan had inflicted "immeasurable damage and suffering" on innocent people but said future generations of Japanese should not have to keep apologising.
About 200 South Korean protesters gathered in front of Japanese Embassy in Seoul and burned photographs of Prime Minister Abe as well as mutilated his effigy.
"South Korea had been under the colonial rule of Japan for 36 years and today is the 70th anniversary of Korean's liberation from Japan. However, Japanese Prime minister Abe denied and made an excuse for its past history as well as made a fool of the international society through his statement yesterday. Therefore, we strongly condemn this kind of Japan's behavior," said a protest leader Park Chan-sung.
The legacy of the war still haunts relations with China and South Korea, which suffered under Japan's often brutal occupation and colonial rule before Tokyo's defeat by the allies in 1945. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
