Catalan protesters hurled paintballs, used rubber bullets and plastic balls at police in Barcelona on Saturday (October 26) as they gathered outside Spanish National Police headquarters where they protested against violent police action last week after the conviction of secessionist leaders on October 14 triggered daily demonstrations calling for their release.
The demonstration near the police headquarters was organised by the Catalan Committee for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) and followed an earlier peaceful demonstration organised by grassroots groups Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) and Omnium Cultural that attracted 350,000 people.
The Catalan secessionist movement prides itself on being nonviolent, but some protests that followed the conviction of the separatist leaders were marred by clashes between police who fired foam projectiles and rubber bullets and protesters who torched cars, hurled molotov cocktails and set up barricades using garbage containers and cafe furniture which they set alight.
The region's electorate is split over the issue of independence, and supporters of continued unity with Spain will hold a rival rally in Barcelona on Sunday (October 27) that the leaders of the country two main centre-right parties, PP and Ciudadanos, are due to attend.
