- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry held talks with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in Havana on Friday (August 14), shortly after the U.S. officially raised the U.S. flag at the embassy in Havana.
Their historic meeting in Havana comes after the U.S. Secretary of State said at the embassy ceremony America will remain a "champion of democratic principles and reforms" in Cuba but that Cubans should determine the future of their country.
With ties now restored, there are plenty of hurdles along the way to normal relations between the two neighbours.
The Americans have pressed Cuba on human rights, the return of fugitives granted asylum and the claims of Americans whose property was nationalised by Fidel Castro's government.
Cuba wants the United States to end its economic embargo of the island, return the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in eastern Cuba and halt radio and television signals beamed into Cuba.
Kerry is the first chief of American diplomacy to visit Cuba in 70 years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
