- Story Text: Former Birmingham City FC owner Carson Yeung was freed from prison on bail on Friday (August 14) after Hong Kong's top court said he could appeal against his conviction.
Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma released the barber-turned-businessman on almost one million U.S. dollars bail and ordered him to surrender his passport.
Yeung was convicted on five counts of money laundering and in March 2014 was jailed for six years. He was found guilty of laundering 93 million U.S. dollars (55 million pounds) between January 2001 and December 2007.
A former hair stylist to Hong Kong's rich and famous, Yeung told his trial that he had amassed his wealth through hairdressing, share trading, property purchases, gambling in the world's casino hub of Macau and other investments.
Prosecutors had pointed to what they said were suspicious cheque payments made to Yeung by employees of Macau companies, including a junket operator, which earns commissions from casinos to attract cash-rich gamblers.
Yeung, aged 55, first bought shares in Birmingham FC in 2007. He was arrested in June 2011 and stepped down from Birmingham in February 2014, just before his conviction.
His appeal is not expected to be heard until next year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
