Russian conscript Valery Permyakov accused of murdering a family in the Armenian city of Gyumri was sentenced on Wednesday (August 12) to 10 years in prison by the Russian garrison military court in Yerevan.
He was accused of desertion, illegal arms possession and usage of weapons. Permyakov pleaded guilty at the trial.
He will stand a separate trial in the Armenian court on murder charges later.
Valery Permyakov is said to have confessed to killing six members of Avetisyan family in January after he left the Russian military base, some 120 kilometres north-west of the capital Yerevan.
The Avetisyan family, including their two-year-old daughter, were found dead in their home in Gyumri. Their 6-month-old baby was wounded but later died in the hospital.
At first the 19-year-old conscript Permyakov was reported missing by the Russian defence ministry. He had his assault rifle with him and is said to have walked into Avetisyan family house by accident as he was thirsty.
He was caught on the day of the murder by Russian border guards, while attempting to cross the border into Turkey.
Armenian police have reported that Permyakov has confessed to the killing of six people. Permyakov's weapon and a Russian military uniform with his name on it were found at the crime scene. No motive was given for his actions. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
