- Story Text: At least one woman was killed and another one injured in the latest shelling of the rebel-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday (August 12).
Residents of Kuibishevsky district in the north-west of the city said the shells came last night from the Ukrainian side and set on fire several houses.
"Just after 6 p.m. a very heavy shelling started. People were so scared that they hid in basements. At the time my children were on their way back from a kindergarten, a small three-year-old child with my daughter-in-law. They got a call saying "Marina, don't rush home as everything is on fire here," said Donetsk resident Alla. She blamed the Ukrainian troops for shelling residential areas.
Earlier on Wednesday Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists accused each other of attempting to break a six-month-old peace agreement, with a rebel official warning of the threat of "a big war" if the ceasefire crumbles.
An elderly woman in Donetsk said her house was recently destroyed by shelling she was in a desperate situation.
"I live with strangers now. Where should I go? I was injured here and here. And my tooth also... I have a picture. What kind of war is it?", she said.
Two apartment blocks were also damaged with windows shattered and roofs partially destroyed.
Local resident Nina witnessed a woman being killed by shrapnel next to apartment block entrance. She said the woman did not rush to the shelter fast enough.
"(We sleep) in basements. We do not spend nights here for the second year now. We do not live here. I just come, get my medical drugs, and run down again. They are sadists. I do not have any other name for them. Bloodsuckers! Corrupt bitches!", Nina said referring to those behind the attack.
Kiev's military this week reported the heaviest rebel artillery attacks in six months and fresh fighting near the strategic port city of Mariupol and Ukraine's allies expressed particular concern.
Rebels have, in turn, accused government troops of increased shelling in defiance of the peace deal, brokered in the Belarus capital Minsk in mid-February to end a conflict in which over 6,500 have been killed.
Ivica Dacic, the chairman of security watchdog the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), on Tuesday (August 11) described the latest escalation in separatist eastern regions as "alarming" and called on both sides to adhere to the ceasefire.
The OSCE has reported a significant increase of ceasefire violations in areas east and north of Mariupol.
Government troops are boosting their defences in the conflict zone with new weapons and equipment, said Olexander Turchynov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, adding the move was in line with the peace deal.
The conflict broke out in April last year, when separatists rebelled in mainly Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine against the rule of Kiev's new Western-looking government. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
