- Story Text: About a hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered on Thursday (August 13) on the street above Paris' urban beach to protest a day-long festival dedicated Tel Aviv, with minor scuffles breaking out with the police.
The event called 'Tel Aviv on Seine' celebrating the Israeli seaside resort has been condemned by left-wing and pro-Palestinian critics who say it implicitly condones Israeli government policy.
Demonstrators clapped and chanted, standing behind a large cloth banner which read 'Apartheid on Seine'.
Police scuffled with demonstrators as they tried to move them on when they sat down on the road, blocking traffic.
Earlier in the day, protesters staged a parallel event which they dubbed 'Gaza on Seine' along the banks of the river, flying a Palestinian flag and wearing t-shirts reading 'Free Palestine' and 'Boycott Israel'.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had resisted calls to cancel the day's activities -- which include themed DJ sets and food stalls -- saying that it is about celebrating dialogue between cultures.
Foreign cities have often been honoured in the past but this time some 300 police were on duty on the short stretch of riverbank along the Seine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
