- Story Text: Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday (August 11) to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries as well as international cooperation.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Russia have been cool lately over Moscow's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Riyadh opposes. But according to Lavrov, the situation in bilateral ties has started to change this summer.
"Our relations have significantly intensified lately. And we see great importance in the visit by Deputy Crown Prince and Defence Minister Muhammad bin Salman to the Russian Federation and his talks with President Putin in St. Petersburg," Lavrov said.
"The agreements reached at that time open a path to close cooperation in various areas both in our bilateral relations and with regard to cooperation in regional and international affairs," he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Mohammad Bin Salman in June on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg economic forum.
Lavrov also said he and Jubeir will hold further talks on the situation in the region.
"We continued the dialogue about the situation in the Middle East which were started in St. Petersburg between the president and the Deputy Crown Prince last week in Doha and I am glad to have this opportunity today to discuss the situation in different regions of the Middle East and Northern Africa in detail," Lavrov said.
Jubeir also talked about the progress in the relations between the two countries after the meeting in St. Petersburg.
"These documents and meetings that happened in St. Petersburg have paved a solid basis for continuation of our cooperation in all areas," he said.
"We have many questions and possibilities for discussion of a wide range of questions of both the regional and the international agenda and to reach agreements in a way that would be in the interest of our countries," Jubeir added.
The ministers will hold a joint news conference after the talks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
