- Story Text: Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Jakarta on Tuesday (August 11) to enhance bilateral ties and strengthen interfaith communication between the two countries.
Parolin and Marsudi shook hands before sitting down for talks.
At a joint news conference following their meeting, Parolin conveyed greetings from Pope Francis to the Indonesian people.
"I would like to convey to the authorities and to all the people of Indonesia the cordial greetings the paternal greetings of his Holiness of Pope Francis who I'm representing here during this visit, especially in this occasion of the 70th anniversary of your independence and the celebration of your national day," he said.
Indonesia will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the country's independence on August 17.
Parolin hailed Indonesia as a good example of interfaith harmony.
"We are looking at Indonesia like a very very good example of peaceful coexistence and collaboration among religions and this is the point I want to stress in a few words to say it is important today to find the way how to respect each other and how to accept each other," he told reporters.
Although Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, it also officially recoganise five other religions: Catholicism, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism and has been praised for a fairly solid religious tolerance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
