- Story Text: Turkish coastguard rescued some 110 migrants, mostly Syrians on Wednesday (August 12) adrift in the Aegean Sea after they failed to reach Greece.
Members of the group included dozens of women and children. One of them, Mohammed, a resident of Kobani who has been sheltering in Turkey for three years, said he hoped to get to Germany eventually.
"We are trying to migrate to another country to study at school, to live a different life. We don't want war. Me and my friends are fleeing violence. Everybody flees to Germany and that's what we want to do but we tried a couple of times and we were caught everytime," he said.
"We gave half of the money to them at the Bazaar and when we arrive to Greece, we give the rest of the money. We don't have any problem once we arrive to Greece," he added.
Financially strapped Greece has struggled to cope with a surge in migrants and refugees arriving on its Mediterranean shores. The United Nations refugee agency said 124,000 migrants had arrived in Greece by sea.
Most of the migrants are travelling to Greek islands in the Aegean Sea from the nearby Turkish mainland. Turkey is home to more than 1.8 million Syrian refugees escaping the ongoing civil war.
Many of those fleeing are from war-torn Syria, but others flee hardship and violence in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran using boats run by Turkish smugglers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
