- Story Text: A U.S. F-16 fighter jet crashed in a forest in southern Germany during a training flight on Tuesday (August 11) but the pilot managed to eject safely, police and U.S. Air Force officials said.
The accident occurred at 09.38 a.m. (0738 GMT) near Engelmannsreuth in the north of Bavaria state, a spokesman for the U.S. Army said.
The pilot safely ejected and jettisoned fuel tanks over an unpopulated area, he added. The F-16 was carrying six 25-pound (11 kg.) trainee munitions; no live munitions were on board.
The crash, whose cause was under investigation, occurred during a training flight out of the U.S. Army Garrison in Grafenwoehr, Bavaria.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Army in Europe praised the cooperation between emergency services.
"I would also like to say that I am very impressed by the coordination of the emergency response teams, the American, Deutsch - German Red Cross, very impressed by the response efforts, good coordination as I have witnesses up on the scene," LTC Brian Carlin told journalists in Engelmannsreuth.
A spokesperson for the regional police said recovery work would take some time.
"I believe that the work at the aircraft will take days. It needs to be extinguished, recovered, the terrain is very difficult to access, so I think it will take a few more days. However we have to talk about luck because the aircraft crashed in the forest, people live around here but nobody was injured," Juergen Stadter told Reuters TV.
Regional police said the pilot was found by a passerby in the woods and was getting treatment for light injuries at a nearby hospital. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
