- Story Text: Women from across Brazil gathered in Sao Paulo on Monday (August 3) to take part in the fifth edition of the annual Miss Bum-Bum pageant in which contestants are judged on their behinds.
The contestants literally stopped traffic as they posed in green and yellow Brazil bikinis in the middle of the Avenida Paulista, Sao Paulo's bustling main avenue.
They also caused a public-transport storm last week, parading through the central Conceicao metro station.
Over 500 competitors signed up for the pageant, and of the 27 chosen to represent each of the Brazilian states, 15 will be put through by public vote to shake their bum-bums in November's final.
"The Miss Bum-Bum competition is to elect Brazil's most beautiful bum. It started five years ago here in Brazil, and now we are opening up the phase of public voting. Of the 27 who are here, only 15 will go through to the finals here in Sao Paulo," said organiser Cacau Oliver as he surveyed the bounty.
For some of the contestants, taking part in the competition was a dream come true.
"It is an honour to compete in Miss Bum-Bum, I never participated before, I always dreamed of taking part," said Debora Dunhill, representing the central Brazilian state of Tocantins.
"There is a time of life when we have to change, so this competition came along to add something to my life, it is a lovely competition. For me, it is the best competition that is out there at the moment. It is something different," added former actress Fernanda Abraao of the north-eastern state of Maranhao.
This year contestants had to prove that they had not undergone surgery nor used chemical products.
Bottoms are a thing of national pride in Brazil, where some Carnival beauties have been reported to get their behinds covered by insurance companies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
