  • Story Text: Two people were struck by gunfire during a late night confrontation on Sunday (August 9) between riot police and protesters, police said, after a day of peaceful events commemorating the fatal shooting of Michael Brown last year.
    The shooting of Brown - an unarmed, black 18-year-old - by a white policeman on August 9, 2014 ignited months of demonstrations and a national debate on race and justice.
    Gunshots were fired as police sought to disperse demonstrators who began blocking traffic and smashing windows along a street which was a flashpoint of last year's unrest following the shooting.
    Anniversary commemorations had begun with a quiet march through the St. Louis suburb, following a moment of silence for Brown.
    The scene changed dramatically after dark with dozens of protesters blocking traffic and smashing store windows along West Florissant Avenue.
    The unrest on Sunday night was in marked contrast to a day of mostly subdued, peaceful commemorations in Ferguson and elsewhere.
