- Story Text: Warsaw sweltered in a heatwave on Friday (August 7) as crowds took to the banks of the Vistula river to sunbathe -- with more space available than usual after high temperatures have led to a drop in water levels.
Stones were exposed and barges lodged aground after temperatures soared in the Polish capital. While locals and visitors could still enjoy ferry trips, ship races had to be cancelled due to the lower-than-usual depth.
One hydrologist from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management said that the river level was approaching the minimum ever observed.
"Today the river level is 63 centimetres. These centimetres do not say much. What says the most is that the minimum level we have observed was 52 centimetres, so we are approaching the minimum level we have observed on Vistula in Warsaw," hydrologist Marianna Sasim said.
Long-term forecasts do not predict a drastic improvement in the hydrological situation, so Warsaw residents may have to get used to that their favourite river at low levels for the days ahead. But for now, many seemed happy to use the large banks to sunbathe before taking a dip in the water.
Temperatures in Poland have hit over 30 degrees Celsius this week and may reach 39 degrees next week, an unusually high reading, according to Poland's meteorology institute. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
