- Story Text: Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi made an online appeal on Thursday (August 6) to the international community to assist her country after floodwaters recede.
"May I appeal to you all those who would like to help our country, to make it co-ordinated effort with regard to the rehabilitation process which should be starting soon. In many areas now, the water has receded. There we will have to start on rehabilitation. Our greatest need at the moment are shelters, medication." said Suu Kyi in video posted on her Facebook page.
She stressed the importance of working co-ordinately with the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, the non-governmental organization established by Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy to deliver aid relief supplies effectively to the people.
She also added that the November election should not affect the nationwide natural disaster.
The 70-ear-old Nobel laureate visited people in Bago's flood-hit areas on Monday (August 3).
Myanmar's president urged people to leave a low-lying southern delta region, which has become inundated due to rain water which has flowed in from other areas.
The widespread floods that were triggered last week by heavy monsoon rains have killed 81 people, according to Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, 101,000 acres (409 sq km) of paddy in the Ayeyarwady Region have been flooded, but just 180 acres were destroyed.
Country-wide, the impact on a agriculture has been far greater. According to the ministry 1.17 million acres of paddy field have been flooded, with 152,500 acres destroyed.
