- Story Text: Palestinians in the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday (December 13) protested against Israel for what they called its increased restrictions on Muslim access to a shrine holy to Muslims and Jews.
Hebron is the largest Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank, territory Israel captured in the 1967 Midddle East war, with a population of some 200,000.
About 1,000 Israeli settlers live in the heart of the city and for years it has been a place of religious friction between Muslims and Jews.
At the heart of the tension is an ancient holy site known to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque and to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
Jews believe that the Tomb of the Patriarchs is where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives, are buried. Muslims, who, like Christians, also revere Abraham, built the Ibrahimi mosque, also known as the Sanctuary of Abraham, in the 14th century.
Palestinians say Israeli authorities often restrict Muslim access to the shrine, which has sections for Muslim and Jewish prayer.
Palestinians must pass through Israeli military checkpoints in order to reach the mosques, and often complain of restrictions on movement in the city.
The Palestinians seek a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. The latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks broke down in 2014.
