- Story Text: The Brazilian Banco Central launched on Thursday (August 6) its third round of commemorative coins for the Olympics and Paralympic Games, the week that Rio de Janeiro begins its one year countdown to the Opening Ceremony.
Also launched at the ceremony at the Maracana stadium was a series of commemorative stamps complete with designs of handball and cycling.
Among the latest round are one gold coin, four silver coins and four others to enter general circulation.
The gold coin is designed as an homage to the city's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and to Olympic fighting. Around the edge it displays one of the Olympic mantras, "Citius, Altius, Fortius" - faster, higher, stronger.
The silver coins represent a running theme in each of the rounds to have been launched, illustrating the flora, fauna, architecture and music of Brazil.
They feature images of monkeys native to Rio, orchids, the Sambadrome where the famous carnival parades take place, and a band playing forro, a musical style originating from the northeast of Brazil.
The one-real (0.28-U.S. dollar) coins which are set to enter into general circulation, celebrate the Olympic football, volley, judo and Paralympic athletics, the sports for which Brazil has previously won its greatest number of medals.
"This is an homage to sport and a way to remember the grandeur of the Olympic Games. It remembers the union between nations and athletes overcoming their limits. It represents every nation on our planet. The Brazilian Central Bank aims to leave its Olympic legacy in these coins as an expression of the grandiose nature of the 2016 Games," said Joao Sidney de Figueiredo Filho, Head of Circulation at the Banco Central.
Locals will soon be able to obtain the one-real coins from the Banco Central in exchange for a bank slip, a deposit, or cash.
In total, 36 different commemorative coins will be launched up until the Games. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
