- Story Text: Ministers from the East Asia Summit met in Malaysia on Thursday (August 6), paving the way for a leadership summit later this year.
The ministers gathered to set the agenda for the meetings of heads of state in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur in November.
The East Asia Summit (EAS) is an initiative of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), connecting the ten ASEAN countries with their dialogue partners from the Asia Pacific region, including the United States, China and Russia. This year the leaders will be meeting for the fifth time.
Key issues relating to the region are expected to be tabled, including counter-terrorism and the long-standing South China Sea issue.
Although it is not officially on the agenda, expectations were high that the South China Sea would be discussed against a backdrop of increasing tensions and overlapping claims in the potentially energy-rich region. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
