Tens of thousands of protesters marched in parts of India on Wednesday (December 18) to protest a new law that gives citizenship to religious minorities persecuted in neighbouring Muslim countries.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) makes it easier for non-Muslims from the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who settled in India prior to 2015 to gain Indian citizenship.
In eastern Kolkata city, State Chief Mamata Banerjee hit the streets for the third time this week while in northeastern Guwahati city, protesters carried banners, posters and raised slogans demanding the government to repeal CAA.
Modi government's new measure follows the revocation of the special status of the Muslim-majority Kashmir region, and a court ruling clearing the way for the construction of a Hindu temple on the site of a mosque razed by Hindu zealots. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
