- Story Text: Japanese companies are showcasing its latest robots designed to better serve the ageing society at the 'International Robot Exhibition' on Wednesday (December 18).
Toyota's latest humanoid robot 'T-HR3' is like an avatar that can be controlled remotely by a human operator. The goggle on the operator allows them to envision what the robot is seeing, while they feel what the robot touches through the sensory feedback gloves they wear.
Toyota hopes this robot will help look after the elderly as Japan faces an ageing population.
"With our remote-control technology, you can look after someone when you're not there, or care for someone while you're working at home," Toyota Motor's Humanoid Robot Group Manager, Tomohisa Moridaira said.
Manufacturing company Suncall demonstrated its latest robot 'Orthobot', designed for people who need assistance with walking. The device is attached to a long leg brace and once it is switched on it can help the human leg to bend and stretch for walking.
"We want to break the barrier of people not wanting go outside because they can't walk. We want them to live a happy social life," Rei Takahashi, a representative from Suncall's Medical Device and Solution Development said.
The exhibition now in its 23rd year has over 200 companies participating and will run until Saturday (December 21), at least 130,000 people are expected to visit.
