- Story Text: Large groups of migrants attempted to make it on to freight trains near the Euro Tunnel terminal at Coquelles in northern France on Wednesday (August 5) night.
More than 3,000 people have set up makeshift camp in the nearby French port of Calais, and every evening many of them have been making the two-hour journey on foot towards the perimeter fences which surround the tracks.
Reuters saw a number of migrants make it on to the tracks. They then hid around freight trains on the outskirts of the terminal, as they tried to evade French riot police who were searching the area.
Nine people have died trying to cross the Channel since the beginning of June.
Eurotunnel, the train operator that runs freight and passenger services through the tunnel claims that the number of people trying to break in to the tracks has increased significantly in the last few weeks, with more people arriving in Calais' swelling migrant camp every day.
Europe has seen a huge influx of migrants from the Middle East and Africa trying to escape poverty and violence at home and the issue has shot to international prominence as thousands try to make their way to Britain from the French port of Calais. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
