- Story Text:China's foreign ministry said on Friday (December 20) Canada's attempt to link Sino-U.S. trade matters with other issues is doomed to fail.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang made the comments at a regular media briefing when asked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's latest remarks on China-U.S. trade talks.
Trudeau said on Thursday (December 19) that the U.S. government should not finalize a trade deal with China unless the pact also secured the release of two Canadians detained by Beijing.
The two men were picked up separately in December 2018, shortly after police in Vancouver held Huawei Technologies Co Ltd Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. arrest warrant. The two Canadians face state security charges.
