I think 'patriotic' is a two-way street. The city or the country needs to provide patriotism and needs to show what it is and for the citizens to be able to be patriotic. If you're throwing away their freedom and you're not aligned to, or you're promising one thing and doing another thing then most citizens won't uphold patriotic values and they will revolt against the country." VARIOUS OF PEDESTRIANS WALKING (SOUNDBITE) (English) OFFICE WORKER, MICHAEL, SAYING: "China has always been flexing its financial muscle overseas, in Africa, in Sri Lanka, in some islands everywhere in the world. They're basically interfering with everyone's internal affairs and now when other countries want something on their behalf about their interests in China, in Hong Kong, in Macau, in Taiwan, they say it's foreign interference. We have a very very blatant double standard here." We may be afraid of...maybe because in mainland China, there were cases in which people are arrested after they voice their political opinion. So we have worries about this." - Story Text:Protests continued in Hong Kong on Friday (December 20) while residents in Macau said they were overall "satisfied" after Chinese President Xi Jinping made a speech emphasizing that foreign forces will not interfere in both special administrative regions.
Xi, speaking at a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Macau's handover to Chinese rule, heaped praise on the former Portuguese colony for its patriotism and loyalty but did not refer directly to six months of anti-government protests in the nearby former British colony of Hong Kong.
Just after the speech, a few dozen people in Hong Kong's Central business district staged a protest opposing the police's freezing of $9 million in funds for anti-government protesters raised by activists. In Macau, residents said they were overall satisfied the city's stability, but Candy Hao, 24, said she was "afraid" to voice her demands.
Xi arrived Macau for a three-day visit on Wednesday (December 18), where he joined performers singing a patriotic song on stage at a variety show celebrating the 20th anniversary of the handover.
