- Title: U.S. foreign policy under Trump's administration in 2019.
- Date: 18th December 2019
- Summary: A delegation of U.S. officials including deputy U.S. trade representative Jeffrey Gerrish left their hotel Beijing on Monday (January 7) ahead of crunch trade talks with Chinese officials. The talks were the first US-China face-to-face trade talks since U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met in December 2018 and agreed to a 90-day truce in a trade war that has roiled international markets. Pacific Fleet spokeswoman Rachel McMarr said in an emailed statement that the USS McCampbell, a guided-missile destroyer, carried out a "freedom of navigation" operation, sailing within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Island chain, "to challenge excessive maritime claims". China claims the islands, and called the move a "provocation". The statement came as trade talks between China and the United States were under way in Beijing, the first round of face-to-face discussions since both sides agreed to a 90-day truce in a trade war that roiled international markets. The relevant conduct of the U.S. ship violated Chinese law and relevant international law, infringed upon China's sovereignty, and damaged the peace, security and positive trend in the relevant waters. China firmly opposes the U.S. side's relevant actions. We urge the United States to immediately cease this kind of provocation. China will continue to take necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty and security."
