- Title: Highlights of main world events 2014-2016
- Date: 19th December 2019
- Summary: 2014 The crisis in Ukraine began in November 2013 when the country's then president, Viktor Yanukovich, under Russian pressure, turned his back on a trade deal with the European Union and accepted a $15 billion bailout from Moscow. That prompted three months of street protests, over 100 people were killed leading to the overthrow of Yanukovich on February 22, 2014. Moscow denounced the events as an illegitimate coup and refused to recognise the new Ukrainian authorities. In late February, Russian troops seized the Crimean peninsula in a bloodless military takeover. A referendum on Crimea's status was held on March 16, 2014 where over 95 percent of voters chose to join Russia. The referendum was not recognised by the United States and Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law completing Crimea's union with Russia on March 21, 2014. This was followed by growing unrest in eastern Ukraine where armed pro-Russian separatists seized government buildings and declared independence. The fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine. The stand-off between Russia and the West has brought relations between the two sides to their lowest since the Cold War.
