- Story Text: Beach goers were met with Christmas trees in the sand and lifeguards in Santa hats at Sydney's Bondi beach on a hot Christmas Day (December 25).
"I find it very weird here. Because there's no snow or anything. So for us, you know it's a, Santa comes with reindeer. But, it seems just happy vibes, you know. The families are out. It's different, but it's still amazing. Like, the Christmas trees on the beach is just ridiculous but, very good, very good," said Pete Ross, a tourist from Scotland.
Volunteer lifeguards kept a watchful eye over surfers enjoying the waves and the season spirit.
Australia is experiencing one of its hottest years on record as bushfires have already destroyed more than 3.7 million hectares (9.1 million acres) since they erupted in spring. Last week temperatures reached over 41 degrees Celsius (105 Celsius) as an extreme heatwave swept across the country and a long-running drought in the country's east has created tinder-dry conditions.
