- Story Text: China strongly opposes the 2020 U.S. defence draft against Chinese firms and urges Washington to go past its political bias to create favourable conditions for Chinese companies, China's commerce ministry said on Thursday (December 26).
China will closely monitor the situation and defend the interests of Chinese firms, Gao Feng, spokesman at the ministry, said at a regular media briefing.
Gao's comment comes after the U.S. senate passed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) which strengthens the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews proposals to determine if they threaten national security.
The legislation also calls "long-term strategic competition with China" a top priority for the United States, which should improve the defense capabilities of self-ruled Taiwan, claimed by China as a wayward province.
