- Story Text: Students at Colombo University's Astronomical Society set up their telescopes early on Thursday (December 26) to see a solar eclipse.
In Sri Lanka, the eclipse was best visible in northern Jaffna where 87 percent of the sun was covered by the moon and in Colombo about 84 percent of the sun was eclipsed.
The annular eclipse started from Dammam in Saudi Arabia and travelled across the Indian Ocean towards Southern India and over the Northern part of Sri Lanka and ended above the Pacific Ocean.
When the eclipse took place, the moon was about 400,000 km away from the earth and was moving at a speed of 1 km per second or 3,600 km per hour.
