- Story Text: Two passenger buses collided in Russia's Far East on Wednesday (August 5) killing 16 people and injuring 56.
The collision happened on a highway near the city of Khabarovsk, some 8,300 kilometres (5,200 miles) east of Moscow close to the border with China.
One of the buses turned over as a result of the head-on collision.
Local authorities said that the preliminary investigation concluded that both drivers violated traffic rules.
Following the crash Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov told President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that the government may introduce stricter penalties for unsafe and drunk driving.
Death rates from Russian road accidents are higher than in most Western countries, and the country has gained fame for its erratic drivers, with footage of cars overtaking on blind corners, rear-ending each other and careening off the road amassing millions of views on YouTube. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
