The river Ubangi burst its banks in October causing the initial flooding. Repeated rains caused the water level to rise. Some homes collapsed in the city of 138,000 residents. The mayor of Zongo, Placide Kumugo Soko said 36,822 people including 24,000 children were now homeless and in desperate need of drinkable water, medicine and food. Soko said they had not seen that level of flooding in five years.
