- Title: Extreme weather timeline for January - July 2019
- Date: 28th December 2019
- Summary: Stifling heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures to parts of Europe, killing at least six people. In the worst-hit Gard region, France's highest-ever temperature was registered on Friday (June 25) at 45.9 degrees Celsius (114 degrees Fahrenheit). In Spain, unusually hot conditions in June were registered for four consecutive days. The mercury reached 43.3 degrees at a meteorological station between the Catalan towns of Vinebre and Masroig in northeastern Spain, close to an area hit by wildfires, officials said. Forty of Spain's 50 regions were placed on weather alert in June. Farmers and forestry workers are among those raising the alarm after the second exceptionally dry, warm summer in a row in Germany. Low ground water levels mean crops begin to wilt before they have produced the maximum yield, while trees are less able to defend themselves against pests like bark beetles. Paris sweltered in record temperatures of around 42 Celsius (107 Fahrenheit) the expected peak of the summer's second intense heatwave. The capital's record to date was 40.4 C (104.7 F) registered in 1947. The Landes Lake is the Limousin region's largest nature reserve and is usually home to a wide variety of animal and plant life including 240 different species of birds. But since the late spring barely a drop of rain has fallen and the lake has shrunk from an average size of 100 to 15 hectares and falling. Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the U.N. World Meteorological Organization said Greenland had not had an exceptional year until June, but its ice had been melting rapidly in recent weeks, she added citing data from a Danish climate scientist. This will result in high temperatures, and consequently enhanced melting of the Greenland ice sheet." Britain swelters in the hottest day ever recorded. On Monday (July 29), the UK's national weather service confirmed that Britain's highest ever temperature of 38.7 Celsius (101.7 Fahrenheit) was in Cambridge on July 25 during a heatwave which gripped Europe. Britain's 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 2002, a sign of the effects of climate change, a report by the UK Met Office published on Wednesday (July 31) shows.
