- Story Text: Residents of Kyrgyzstan and foreign tourists flocked to the mountain valley on the shore of a lake for the festival of the national sports.
Hills surrounding a picturesque valley some 900 kilometres to the south-west of the capital filled with the thumping of hoofs, as riders showed off their skills on horseback.
Audience cheered as the daring contestants picked up coins from the ground, while galloping along, attempted to pull each other out of a saddle and competed in grasping the corpse of a goat.
Kambarbek Adishov, one of the organizers, said the event was meant to bring tourist attention to Kyrgyzstan's south.
"Our objective is to make tourism in the south (of Kyrgyzstan) more popular. This event is very important to us. As you know, attracting every tourist takes a lot of our efforts. So I think we have reached our goal. We see a lot of tourists today who came from far away countries, from European countries," he said.
Claus, a German tourist who attended the festival, was excited about the event.
"So we decided to go here, we made it, we arrived. Good. I have to say, we are here now - and yesterday evening we arrived - it is pleasant, many people here, it is a pleasant area, it is unbelievable to see these high mountains, and this festival. And people are all in a good mood," he said.
Tourists could also taste local delicacies and watch traditional houses clothing.
According to Kyrgyz media, one of the objectives of the festival was to create extra working places for the population of the area. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
