- Story Text: Women from different fields of life took part in a walk in India's southern Thiruvananthapuram city as they attempted to reclaim the streets at night on Sunday (December 29).
The 'Night Walk' organised by Kerala state government saw women along with their children take part as they aimed to create awareness and instill confidence in women and feel safe to come out in the dark.
The event was organised on the death anniversary of a young physiotherapist victim who was raped in December 2012 and died due to the physical injuries inflicted upon her.
"Women are so insecure you know after a certain time and that the darkness becomes the way to also restrict women from doing anything so the fact that we can actually step out and say look this darkness is ours also and we don't have to be nervous," said Indian Film Editor, Beena Paul.
India strengthened its laws on sexual violence against women after the 2012 gang rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus that led to an outpouring of anger. However, reports of crime against women in the country often surface in huge numbers.
India recorded more than 32,500 cases of rape in 2017, about 90 a day, according to the most recent government data. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
