- Story Text: From the ground and from the sky, the New York Police Department (NYPD) will be keeping a close watch on New Year's Eve activities.
Early on Tuesday (December 31), there was a blizzard of police activity in Times Square.
Thousands of police officers, some in uniform others in plainclothes, were on duty. More than 1,200 security cameras were in use and police vehicles and metal barricades blocked off streets.
Also for the first time, police hoped to use drones in the air as an additional layer of surveillance. The police department had planned to use drones last year, but rainy weather grounded the drones.
Additional security measures include bomb-sniffing dogs and metal detectors.
