- Story Text: Almaty's 2022 Winter Olympic Bid Committee was confident of winning the bid after showing the best of their city in a presentation to International Olympic Committee on Friday (July 31).
During their one-hour presentation in Kuala Lumpur, the high-powered delegation from Kazakhstan asked the 85 IOC members who will decide the vote to send a positive message to all developing countries and award the Games to a Central Asian nation for the first time.
"Hundred percent we did our homework very well and I believe that we'll have very good result, because we try hard and 100 percent we delivered what we want to deliver," spokesman of the bid committee Andrey Kryukov told reporters after the presentation.
As expected, Almaty's presentation also drew heavily on their campaign slogan "keeping it real", a thinly-veiled poke at Beijing's lack of snow.
"We're in a winter city, we're great for winter sports," said Kryukov.
The Almaty team also provided assurances that they had the money to pay for the Games but vowed to keep costs low, which looms as a decisive factor after four of the six original candidates withdrew.
Almaty, which made an unsuccessful attempt to host the 2014 Olympics in 2006, has made up some ground in recent months with a compact bid that sees all sports taking place within a 35-kilometre radius of the former Soviet winter sports hub.
Beijing is also vying for the 2022 games.
The result is expected to be announced around 6 p.m. local time (1000 GMT). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
