- Story Text: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Indonesia President Joko Widodo on Friday (July 31) to enhance bilateral relations between the countries as part of three-day state visit to the Southeast Asian country.
Erdogan arrived on Thursday (July 30) night, accompanied by a number of ministers and business leaders.
He was received by Widodo at a welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
The two leaders then held a bilateral meeting before staging a joint news conference.
"We have discussed several world issues associated with terrorism and the situation in the Middle East. However, we are emphasising mostly on the economy," Widodo said.
Erdogan said the international community needed to act to prevent people travelling to Syria to fight with Islamic State.
"When it comes to foreign fighters, people flying all the way from Australia to Syria to join the ranks Daesh. If people are coming all the way from those faraway countries it's not only a Syrian issue, it's not only an Iraqi issue, if foreign fighters come to Syria all the way from Indonesia to join the ranks of Daesh, it means that it's not a issue of narrow scope. So we need to stand in solidarity and close our borders to these elements. Up until now, around 16,000 foreign fighters were denied entry to our country. We closed our borders to them."
Erdogan will attend state dinner later on at presidential palace.
Indonesia is Erdogan's second stop on his Asian tour after China.
Indonesia is Turkey's largest trade partner in the region and was internationally intertwined in platforms such as the G20, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia) pact.
Indonesia also aims to boost its export numbers to Turkey by more than double in the next four years, with a target of $3.87 billion, according to Indonesia Foreign Ministry data. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
